WUF-11 networking event: Reflections from the Global Future Cities Programme

UK FCDO Global Future Cities Programme’s urban development projects, tools, and methodology, which make a sustainable impact for communities and cities will be discussed on June 29 at World Urban Forum (WUF11) in Katowice, Poland, during the networking event “Transforming our Cities for a Better Urban Future: Reflections from the Global Future Cities Programme”.

The event, hosted by the UK Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (UKFCDO), and supported by co-hosts, UKFCDO local Country Offices, UK Built Environment Advisory Group (UKBEAG) and UN-Habitat’s Urban Lab will bring together partners from multiple sectors, including international donor, international organisations, private, academic and City Authorities to share insights and lessons learnt around multi-partnered, cross-cutting programmes and projects. Partners will also discuss outcomes and their opportunities for achieving transformative urban development aligned with the SDG’s at a local level, whilst connecting to global urban agendas and ambitions.

Focusing on the Global Future Cities Programme, the event will be a demonstration of the UK’s commitment and contribution to global sustainable urban development, advancing prosperity in emerging economies, and its commitment to peer-to-peer learning and knowledge sharing of best practices. The event will highlight some of the innovative concepts, methodologies and outcomes of the UK’s partnerships with UN-Habitat and private sector and academic actors, and will include a showcase of the successes of such partnerships to achieve the SDG’s and global urban agendas. The event aims to also demonstrate the opportunities of addressing cross-cutting themes and its impact on achieving holistic sustainable urban development, with a specific focus on the pillars of urban planning, mobility, climate action and resilience, and data.

Representatives from Cities and private sector Delivery Partners who have participated in the UK-funded Global Future Cities Programme will be invited to share their views and reflect on their experiences and achievements made through the various initiatives. UN-Habitat and UKBEAG will support as co-hosts and allow a platform for voices from the representative partner Cities and Local Teams to share their experiences and reflections on aspects of capacity building, peer-to-peer learning, knowledge exchange and the relevance of institutional and technical capacitation to achieve sustainable urban development. The event will also give space to discuss future opportunities for similar programs and partnerships, where established relationships have been further developed or extended and where stakeholders have found value in the Programme and its exchanges.
