New bicycle road indicates progress towards integrated and seamless transportation network in Istanbul

Reflecting the objectives of the ‘Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan’ being developed as one of the Global Future Cities Programme’s projects in Istanbul, a new bicycle path is being created and well-integrated with public transportation systems. The initiative by Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, in cooperation with WRI Sustainable Cities and The Healthy Cities Partnership, will create a bicycle path connection between the Kartal coast and E-5 Highway, located on the Anatolian side of Istanbul. This will create links with the Marmaray intercontinental commuter rail line and the Istanbul Metro, the city’s rapid transit railway network. Students will benefit from safer daily travel, with many schools located along the bicycle route. The bicycle path is aimed to be completed and put into service in June 2021.
